Functions and Classification of Signs

I. Core Functions of Signs

Signs serve two primary functions:
  1. Marking FunctionSigns exert their role mainly through visual perception. For example: text delivers information, while symbols perform functions such as symbolism, direction indication, and implication. Text styles can reflect distinct characteristics and contextual backgrounds. Combined with symbols, the shapes of signs can further convey symbolic and structural meanings.
  2. Information Dissemination & Advertising FunctionSigns act as an information transmission medium and also have advertising functionality.

II. Classification of Signs

A. Classification by Shape

  1. Horizontal Signs: These signs have a longer horizontal proportion. The entire surface is generally used as an advertising sign, and they are commonly seen on the walls of small shops and large buildings.

  2. Vertical Signs: These signs feature a longer vertical proportion, with the whole surface usually utilized as an advertising sign.

  3. Projecting Signs: These signs protrude from the wall of a building. The entire surface (except the back) or both side surfaces (if applicable) are used as advertising carriers.

  4. Ground Post Signs: These are horizontal, vertical or three-dimensional signs attached to certain fixed structures on the ground.

  5. Roof-mounted Signs: These refer to plate-shaped, cubic or special-shaped signs that are hung or affixed to fixed structures installed on the roof of a building.

B. Classification by Material

  1. Smooth-surfaced Signs: Signs with an oily and highly smooth surface or panel.

  2. Luminescent Material Signs: Signs made of luminescent materials (i.e., neon lights as we commonly call them).

  3. Acrylic Signs: Signs that use acrylic materials as the main material for their panels.

  4. Metal Signs: Signs that use metal as the main material for their panels or characters, when no specific panel material is designated.
